How I Back RB Pass works

I-back halfback pass: QB gives to Y, who moves right and throws to the layered route distribution.
Y takes the live exchange behind the line and becomes the passer on the right edge.
X works the intermediate right window, C climbs to the deep right window, and Z runs the outside return route so Y has three defined levels.

Coach the details

Every player's job

: 5-yard quick in inside — quick inside cut at 4-5 yds — inside mirror of the quick out, get the ball fast.
: 10-yard corner to the sideline — sell vertical, snap to the back pylon.
: take the handoff, press the LOS, and read the playside LB — if he scrapes, cut back; if he fills, bounce.
: 9-yard curl inside — settle in the soft spot, face the QB.

Troubleshooting

What can break the play

Avoid I Back RB Pass when the exchange or play-action timing is not yet dependable, when the league rules prohibit its ball handling, or when the field is too compressed for its routes to separate safely.
Changing the formation or backfield alignment before the snap, which removes the disguise that makes I Back RB Pass pair with its companion calls.
Rushing the mesh, fake, or boot footwork. Every player must hit a fixed landmark at full speed and keep all exchange action behind the line.
Letting the route distribution drift into generic spread spacing. Keep the formation's launch points, route depths, and crossing order intact when making team-specific adjustments.
