The design

How Slant-Flat works

Quick-game variant of Curl-Flat.
Outside receiver runs a slant (3-yd stem, sharp inside cut at ~25° above horizontal, catches at 5-6 yds); slot or back releases to the flat at 0-3 yds. The flat defender is in a high-low bind — sits on the flat = throw the slant behind him; bites on the slant = throw the flat.
Beats press man (slant is a press-man killer because the inside leverage is gained immediately) and Cover 2 (slant fits between the underneath defenders).

: 5-yard slant inside — sharp break at the inside hip, catch in stride and turn upfield.
: 3-yard flat to the sideline — release flat — outlet for the QB.
: 5-yard sit inside — settle in the void, face the QB.
: 18-yard go — full-speed release, ball goes over the top.

Cover 0 — Deep balls — there is no safety help, so a step on a man is a touchdown
Cover 3 — The flats — four underneath defenders can't cover all five underneath zones (curl-flat / slant-flat)
Cover 4 — Underneath and the flats — only three short defenders (stick / snag / quick game)

Troubleshooting

Avoid it when an inside-leverage defender is sitting directly in the slant window with no way to widen him, or when the corner is squatting hard enough to trap the flat.
It is a fast, short answer — not the call when the situation demands a deep sideline completion.
Slant breaks too vertical — should be ~45° inside, not 60-75° (that's a deep dig, not a slant).
Flat releases under the slant; should be on the OUTSIDE so the QB has a clean look at both options.
Slant receiver waits to break — at 3 yards he should already be in the cut.
QB throws late. This is a rhythm throw on the third step from shotgun — if it's not there by then, scramble.
