Split Back Trail — the left back trails the crossing fake, takes the handoff, and attacks the right edge.
The design
How Split Back Trail works
- X and Y align side-by-side behind the shotgun quarterback in Split Back Right.
- The right back Y crosses left first on a hard fake; after a one-count delay, the left back X trails across the quarterback's face, takes the live handoff, and attacks the right edge.
- C releases on a corner opposite the run while Z runs a five-yard quick out to the carrier side.
- Lead and Trail share the same formation and opening picture but reverse which crossing back actually receives the ball.

Every player's job
- : take the handoff, press the LOS, and read the playside LB — if he scrapes, cut back; if he fills, bounce.
- : sell the run fake full speed on the drawn track; finish every rep as if you have the ball.
- : 12-yard corner to the sideline — sell vertical, snap to the back pylon.
- : 5-yard quick out to the sideline — speed out — no break-down, snap to the sideline.
