Same-side outside shallow under an inside Dig — a two-level middle stretch.
The design
How Drive works
- Two receivers release from the SAME side: the outside receiver runs a shallow Drag UNDER (2-4 yds) and the inside receiver runs a Dig/Basic OVER (10-14 yds).
- Their release relationship creates natural traffic, then the two routes high-low the linebacker.
- This same-side origin is what distinguishes Drive from Shallow Cross, whose under and over routes originate on opposite sides.
- Beats man with the rub and zone when the dig settles behind the LBs; usually paired with a backside clear.
Coach the details
Every player's job
- : 3-yard drag inside — shallow cross, find the void in zone.
- : 12-yard dig inside — vertical 12, sharp inside break, sit in the window.
- : 18-yard go — full-speed release, ball goes over the top.
- : 4-yard flat to the sideline — release flat — outlet for the QB.
- : 4-yard sit inside — settle in the void, face the QB.

When and where to run it
- Defensive lookExcellent answer to Cover 1 — the drag eats horizontal space, the dig above stretches the LB level.
