Defender breakdown
Use when: Tight-coverage call — best in known passing situations with an extra rusher. Run 5v5 Man Cover 1 — defenders read pre-snap formation and motion, then play their assignment below. Primary key: alignment first, eyes to keys at the snap.
Assignments:
- : man on @X — trail technique with inside leverage — FS has help over the top, take the underneath route.
- : man on @C — trail technique with inside leverage — FS has help over the top, take the underneath route.
- @NB2: man on @Y — trail technique with inside leverage — FS has help over the top, take the underneath route.
- @CB2: man on @Z — trail technique with inside leverage — FS has help over the top, take the underneath route.
- : drops into Deep middle (FS) — deep middle robber — read QB's eyes, drive on any crosser or post.
When to call it
5v5 man coverage with a free safety helping over the top — best vs balanced offenses when you trust your matchups. The free safety is your insurance against the deep shot.
Known weaknesses
- Picks / bunch concepts — natural rubs from mesh / smash / snag confuse the man switches.
- RB matchup on a defender who isn't your best cover guy — the smaller, quicker target wins.
- Vertical to the weakest matchup — single-high safety can only help on one side.
- Hot routes vs rush — when pressure gets there fast, the man defender gives up an easy completion.
